Are chimney caps necessary? Are they even worth the bother? The answer to both questions is a resounding YES! Chimney caps (see pictures above) perform an invaluable function and should always be considered part of the chimney structure. They cover the top to keep weather and “critters” out. Here in New England, we have rain, ice, sleet, snow, we run the whole weather gamut. An open-topped chimney is just that – an opening into your home through which any of the above mentioned items can enter your home. Without a chimney cap, your exposing your flue, bricks, and mortar to water intrusion which can lead to premature structural failure. A cap keeps the elements out. When properly enclosed in mesh screening, it also keeps out the chipmunks/squirrels/mice/birds which can cause very expensive damage. Simply put, a screen-enclosed chimney cap not only makes sense, but should be considered a must for any chimney structure.
