We here at Warren's Masonry also perform snow removal services during our winter months. We will come out and remove the bulk load of snow on your roof(s) for any homeowner who fears excessive snow loading or has extensive ice damming. The snow load here in New England can run anywhere from 5 pounds per square foot to 60 pounds per square foot (psf) depending on the water content. Simply put, light fluffy snow weighs significantly less than heavy wet snow. Most building codes call for structures to be built with a 45-65 psf rating in New England depending on exact locale, and most family homes with a slanted roof transfer the weight to the walls. However, sometimes with extensive ice damming or particularly wet and heavy storms, the loads can exceed the structure rating and it needs to be removed. This is where we come in. Snow removal is not for the normal DIY homeowner as it can be very dangerous and very tricky to perform. With over 10 years of snow removal experience, we can safely remove the bulk of your snow load - and we're licensed and insured.

So here are some signs to look for when deciding if snow removal is warranted. Interior doors that get stuck closed during the snowy winter months can indicate too great a load on the roof that is literally pushing in (ignore any exterior doors as they are part of the wall support system). Large, wide patches of ice at the end of your shingles on the edge of the roof usually indicate ice damming, and ice weighs exponentially more than snow. Lots of large icicles hanging down from your roof edge usually indicate extensive ice damming as well. And of course any water intrusion (staining) on interior walls and ceilings can indicate backed up ice dams that have broken through exterior barriers and are now slowly melting into the home. If you have any of these red flag symptoms, then you need to contact a professional snow removal company, us, to come and immediately remedy the situation.

But what can you expect? We will remove most of the snow and ice from your roof except the very bottom layer so as to avoid any shingle damage. Don't expect a completely cleaned off roof - the goal is to remove the bulk of the snow and ice without damage to the structure, and this means that some will necessarily be left in place. We carefully rake and shovel from the peak to the edge, carefully breaking up any ice dams, and disposing the snow in safe, untraveled areas around the property. Depending on the size and configuration of your roof(s), we will charge accordingly with a figure provided prior to starting and agreed upon. While you may think taking a snow rake to the last few feet of roof edge seems easy and harmless enough, it is very easy for the average homeowner to end up with chunks of snow and ice all over their head, the driveway and walkways requiring further clean-up, and possibly even having a chunk of ice breaking a window on the way down. And icicles can be deadly - there are approximately 15 deaths per year directly attributed to falling icicles. Let professionals like us handle your snow removal - we know what we're doing! Give us a call today and we'll respond in short order to provide peace of mind and safety for you and yours.
